Abu Dhabi, Dubai Ranked Top Liveable Cities in Middle East and Africa

Abu Dhabi and Dubai continue to be top liveable cities in the Middle East and Africa, with improvements in healthcare and education, as highlighted in the 2024 Global Liveability Index by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU).

Dubai closely followed in second place, showing significant progress in the same categories.

According to the “Crime and Safety Indexes” from the Numbeo website, Abu Dhabi is recognized as one of the safest cities in the world. It ranked first globally on the Safety Index with a score of 88.2 points and had the lowest Crime Index score at 11.8 points. Dubai also performed well, ranking fifth among the world’s safest cities.

In healthcare, recent data from the Dubai Health Authority revealed that the number of licensed and operational healthcare facilities in the emirate reached 5,020 during the first quarter of 2024, with 13,370 licensed doctors.

In Abu Dhabi, during the same period, the number of healthcare facilities reached 3,323, including 67 hospitals, 1,136 health centers, 765 clinics, 1,068 pharmacies, and 287 other healthcare establishments. By the end of 2022, Abu Dhabi had 12,922 licensed doctors.

In education, the 2023-2024 academic year saw Abu Dhabi with 459 schools, including private, public, and mixed institutions. Meanwhile, Dubai had 220 private schools.

The region’s top ten cities featured eight from Gulf countries, which are increasingly stable and influential on the global stage. Among them were Kuwait City, Doha, and Bahrain, ranking 3rd, 4th, and 5th, respectively.

The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), with its six member states, remains one of the world’s economic powerhouses, attracting global talent and deploying vast capital resources.

The global index assessed 173 cities across five categories: stability, healthcare, culture and environment, education, and infrastructure.
